Job Title: Director of Operations
Reporting to: The Principal
The Director of Operations will report to the Principal of the School and will work closely on a day-to-day basis in partnership with the Heads of Primary and Secondary, and the Bursar (Business Director).
While the detailed job description for the role will be amended to suit the skills and experience of the successful candidate, responsibilities are likely to include:
Property and facilities management
The British School in Tokyo currently operates on two sites, hosted by Shibuya Kyoiku Gakuen (SKG) and Showa Women’s University. A key aspect of this role will be to ensure effective communication and the maintenance of good relations with both of these organisations. The school also leases an off-site sports facility at Nagasawa.
The Director of Operations is responsible for all aspects of facility management, including ongoing maintenance work and more significant building/renovation projects. The successful candidate will also assume primary responsibility for the security of students and staff on both sites and at Nagasawa, and will ensure that critical incident plans are in place and updated regularly.
Strategic Leadership and Supervision of the School’s Human Resources Team
The Director of Operations will ensure that the British School in Tokyo is a caring, inclusive organisation providing an outstanding example of best practice in all HR matters. An annual HR report will be prepared for the Board of Trustees.
Responsibilities will include the supervision of the work of the Human Resources Manager
Health and Safety and Compliance with Local Regulations
The Director of Operations will be expected to take the lead in maintaining the highest standards of Health and Safety at BST, in line with best practice in the UK and in other international schools around the world.
He or she will work with the Principal to organise and execute regular health and safety risk assessment exercises to determine the main health and safety issues specific to the School and will prepare an annual Health and Safety report for the Board of Trustees.
Administrative Support Services and Student Transport and Trips
In addition to taking overall responsibility for administrative support at both the SKG and the Showa University sites, the Director of Operations will also assume oversight of the annual performance review process for administrative support staff at BST.
Responsibilities will include supervision of the work of the Administration Manager.
IT (and Data Management)
The Director of Operations will assist the Principal and educational staff appointed by the Principal, with the overall planning and directing of the School's IT and Data Management strategy.
