RESPONSIBLE TO: The Head of School through the appropriate phase curriculum leader.

JOB PURPOSE:

To promote the mission of Growing, Working, Learning Together through a high quality Physical Education programme for all primary age groups, ensuring that pupils develop physical literacy, healthy lifestyles, teamwork and sportsmanship. All staff are expected to uphold the school’s safeguarding and child protection procedures. This job description is supported by the following six standards:

  3. The teacher will demonstrate confident subject knowledge and to plan and deliver the curriculum effectively for student learning.

Duties

The full time PE Teacher will plan, teach and assess PE across all primary classes and will carry out academic, pastoral and administrative duties expected of a professional international school teacher. The PE teacher will also organise and lead lunchtime and after school sports activities, coordinate the after-school clubs programme, and organise whole school sports events.

Teaching and learning

• Plan and teach engaging PE lessons that develop fundamental movement skills, games skills, dance, gymnastics, athletics and age appropriate fitness.
• Differentiate activities to meet the needs of English language learners, pupils with additional needs and pupils who require extension or leadership roles.
• Teach safe play, teamwork, respect, fair play and inclusive participation in line with school values.
• Make appropriate use of available digital tools for recording progress, video feedback and communication with parents.
• Ensure that all activities follow school risk assessment and health and safety procedures.

Curriculum and assessment

• Plan the annual PE curriculum in line with the National Curriculum for England and the school curriculum maps so that pupils build knowledge and skills progressively.
• Assess and record pupil attainment and effort in PE and provide feedback that helps pupils improve.
• Contribute assessment information to class teachers for reports and parent meetings.
• Maintain and update PE schemes of work and inventories of equipment.

Lunchtime and after-school sports

• Lead regular lunchtime sports activities to increase active play and participation.
• Plan and run after-school sports clubs across the year for different age groups and abilities.
• Promote girls participation and inclusive access to teams and events.
• Model positive attitudes to health, fitness and personal wellbeing.

After-school clubs coordinator

• Coordinate the whole school after-school activity programme including sports, creative and enrichment clubs.
• Prepare and publish the termly schedule of clubs and ensure appropriate staffing, supervision ratios and room or facility bookings.
• Liaise with external providers where needed and ensure they follow school safeguarding expectations.
• Monitor attendance, collect pupil voice, and report on participation rates to the Head of School.

Events and fixtures

• Organise and lead the annual Sports Day ensuring that it is safe, inclusive, well communicated and aligned with the school’s house or team system.
• Plan and deliver termly PE mornings or activity mornings that involve parents where appropriate.
• Arrange friendly fixtures, festivals or shared PE events with local or partner schools when possible and ensure that risk assessments, permissions and transport are in place.
• Support performances, wellbeing weeks and other whole school events where PE, dance or movement are required.

Health and safety and facilities

• Ensure all PE equipment is safe, well maintained and appropriately stored.
• Advise leadership on facility needs to deliver a safe and ambitious PE curriculum.
• Teach pupils how to use equipment safely and how to warm up and cool down correctly.

Pastoral care and supervision

• Promote pupil wellbeing and positive behaviour in lessons, changing areas and during activities.
• Supervise pupils during breaks, lunches, transitions, trips and school events according to the staff duty rota.
• Report safeguarding or health concerns promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Professional responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with class teachers, learning assistants and specialist colleagues to support student learning.
• Attend staff meetings, professional learning and appraisal meetings.
• Reliable attendance on all student days and co-curricular duties is an essential requirement of this post.
• Engage in professional development to remain current in PE pedagogy, inclusive practice and international school sport.
• Communicate professionally with parents, including parents who are non native English speakers.

Wider school contribution

• Support and participate in school events, assemblies, services and celebrations, including those linked to the Anglican tradition in a way that is welcoming to all families.
• Promote the profile of PE and sport in the school and the wider community.
• Carry out any other reasonable duties requested by the Head of School that are consistent with the role of PE Teacher.
