New Staff Testimonials

This is my first year at St Michael's! Living in and working in Kobe fulfills me tremendously. Before working at St Michael's, I was teaching in a small primary school in North West London. Life was beginning to feel a bit dull with constant bad weather and the same walk to work every day. When I saw a job advertised here, I applied within hours. Nothing excites me more than the culture of Japan, its food, people and nature. What I love about Kobe is that you can experience the best of both worlds- a buzzing city and beautiful mountains. Not to forget the shopping is just amazing here and I can spend hours window shopping! It's been great to be welcomed by such kind, skilled and caring staff as well as curious children and supportive parents. I am enjoying being part of such a close-knit community who supports you in all aspects of living in Kobe.
Nicola Coburn, Primary Teacher, 2023

I am now in my second year at St Michael’s. I was warmly welcomed from the start and it didn’t take long to feel part of the SMIS community. The induction process was smooth and supportive and helped me to feel at home living and working in Japan in just a few weeks. I have loved teaching the International Primary Curriculum and have been well supported by colleagues whenever I have questions to ask. The atmosphere in school is positive and friendly, and there are many exciting events throughout the year. Kobe is a wonderful city to live in. I especially love the nearby mountains and the many options for eating out! Friendly locals, easy transport and beautiful nature have made travelling further afield in Japan a highly enjoyable experience.
Sal Bunker, Primary Teacher, 2022

When I saw the position advertised for St Michael's International School we researched the school as well as the Kansai region. We decided we had found a brilliant school for our children to attend, in an area which had everything we needed. The beach, lots of mountains, and food from all around the world at our fingertips. We feel extremely blessed to have been given the opportunity to join the St Michael's community. We have been warmly welcomed and have had more offers of help than we can remember. We love meeting people from all over the world and are already starting to feel at home in Kobe. On the weekends, we like to explore the local mountains and try out our Japanese language skills on patient shopkeepers and restaurant owners.
Jane Stackhouse, PE & Music Specialist Teacher, 2018
